Result Analysis
These test results were obtained by some predecessors in 2005 and are referenced here to help more users understand the performance of ceramic bond diamond grinding wheels in machining PCD tools. At that time, ceramic bond diamond grinding wheels in China were still in the early stages of development, facing numerous technical challenges, and had not yet entered mass production, with limited specifications and models. Engineers from Henan Shengchuang Superhard Materials Co., Ltd. were among the first to guide customers in using ceramic bond diamond grinding wheels for diamond grinding, which quickly gained favor among diamond processing manufacturers. Subsequently, the engineers established their own factory in Jiaozuo, Henan, to begin mass production of ceramic bond diamond grinding wheels.
With the advancement of China’s aviation manufacturing industry, PCD and PCBN tools became widely used in the machining industry. For grinding PCD tools:
- Resin bond wheels, being softer, tend to deform during grinding, making them ineffective for PCD tools.
- Metal bond wheels have excessively strong grain retention, resulting in poor self-sharpening and low grinding efficiency, while also causing severe edge damage to PCD tools.
- Ceramic bond diamond wheels, containing more pores, facilitate chip removal and heat dissipation, reducing clogging and workpiece burns.
From the test results, under the same conditions and grinding time, ceramic bond diamond wheels demonstrated significantly higher grinding efficiency compared to resin and metal bond diamond wheels.
In the early stages, ceramic bond diamond wheels for PCD tools lacked standardized specifications and models. Around 2008, domestic manufacturers began producing ceramic bond diamond wheels specifically for PCD tool grinding, alongside pioneers who continued to refine resin bond diamond wheels for this purpose. The 6A2 model gradually became the standard for PCD tool grinding wheels, with common diameters of 150, 125, and 100mm. Many domestic users refer to ceramic bond diamond wheels for PCD tools as 6A2 ceramic diamond wheels, cup-type ceramic diamond wheels, or PCD/PCBN tool grinding diamond wheels. With the development of the machinery manufacturing industry, they are increasingly called ceramic diamond tool grinding wheels.
